A Good Idea Or Bad Idea To Name Your Business After The City You Live In? By Michael “MJ The Terrible” Johnson

Question: I was thinking about naming my business after the city I live in. Good idea or bad idea? Jim Spitzer from Portland, Oregon

Answer: Thank you for the question Jim. Unless your business is a location specific business, I wouldn’t put the name of your city in the name of it. Regional names, like Bayou City Disposal Company, or Austin Electric, or something like that, limits what businesses can do outside of that area.

That is why I like to use, and recommend using, universal names that don’t limit you to being a regional business, like Microsoft, Oracle, Pepsi, Apple, Exxon, Masters of Money, Proctor and Gamble, Forex Investment Group, Universal Healthcare, etc. No one would know where they are located, unless someone looked them up. They could be located in Portland, Austin, Chicago, New York, or just about anywhere else in the world.

Is it possible to name a business after a city, and still grow the business far beyond the cities limits? Sure it is, but business is more often times than not, a game of points. The more points you have/the more things you do right, the better off you are. I hope this helps you to make the best decision possible, for your business. All of my best, Michael “MJ The Terrible” Johnson
